assume 4 box each is 1, so total is 4

the left 2 boxes, the shaded area and unshaded area must equal, hence shaded area is half of the total, which is 2 x 1/2 = 1

the right 2 boxes, 1 box is shaded.

so total shaded area is 1 + 1 = 2
total area is 4

fraction is : 2/4
simplified fraction is : 1/2
